Test PREP TUTORING
FOR THE PSAT

Taking the PSAT is an important milestone in high school, because it prepares students for the SAT, increases chances of getting into a dream college, and can also qualify students for scholarships such as the National Merit Scholarship. Although the PSAT is not required, students who choose to participate in PSAT prep see higher scores nationally on the SAT as opposed to students who do not. At Huntington, our PSAT prep courses are a building block for strong success and confidence when learners take the SAT. View our testimonials.

What Is The PSAT?

The PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test) is the preliminary test that provides experience and practice for the SAT. It is shorter than the SAT, consisting of two section scores –Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and Math – with a score range of 160-760 each. Because only two hours and 45 minutes are allotted for the test, the PSAT does not include an essay section. The PSAT 8/9 can be administered in Freshman and Sophomore year of high school as true practice for the SAT, meaning the scores are not reported to colleges nor qualify for the National Merit Scholarship. The PSAT/NMSQT taken in Junior and Senior year of high school, however, does qualify for scholarships and can be saved for college records.

The Huntington Approach to PSAT Prep

Huntington Learning Center has over 45 years of experience in preparing students for the demands of the PSAT including time-management skills, test-taking strategies, academic skills, and test content knowledge. Our PSAT test prep tutoring approach integrates individualized instruction from highly trained tutors with exam practice to comprehensively prepare high school students for the real tests.

At Huntington, we know that thoughts about college admissions in high school can be daunting to any freshman, sophomore, junior or senior. Although at times it can seem overwhelming, we strongly encourage all high school students to carve out time in their schedule to participate in PSAT test prep tutoring, because the advantages are vast when taken seriously:

  • PSAT scores are indicative of SAT performance. This gives students an opportunity to focus on areas of weakness to better prepare for the SAT. After taking a PSAT, students can access all of the questions on the test and assess their performance on a granular level.
  • PSAT scores can lead to scholarships. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation uses PSAT scores to consider candidates for their national merit program, which can be leveraged to secure additional scholarships.
  • PSAT scores can help students get into a good college. Statistically, students that take the PSAT score better on the actual SAT, a credential that is very important for college admissions.
  • PSAT test experience alleviates anxiety. For those who are not the best test-takers, taking PSAT prep tutoring can alleviate stress of the unknown, increasing chances of doing better on the next exam.

Common questions
About the PSAT

The PSAT is composed of three parts: Reading and Writing, and Math, with a total possible score of 1520. It is 2 hours and 45 minutes long.

The PSAT is offered once a year, in the Fall. A student can take the PSAT in the 9th, 10th and/or 11th grade, and can only qualify for scholarships with the 11th grade score. The PSAT/NMSQT® is offered in the fall to students in 10th and 11th grade and may qualify for scholarships with their 11th grade score.

Although both tests are structured very similarly, they serve two different purposes. The PSAT is not used for college admissions, but it can produce recognition and scholarships for students with the highest scores. Taking the PSAT provides practice and helps students get a sense for taking the SAT, which is used for college admissions.

Each area of the PSAT (Evidence-based Reading & Writing and Math) is scored on a scale from 160 to 760. The scores for the two areas are combined to produce an overall PSAT scaled score of 320-1520.
